NFRC Says Aloha in Hawaii

A striking combination of volcanoes, palm trees, and snow-capped mountains provided the backdrop for this year's spring member meeting in Waikoloa Beach, Hawaii. Almost 100 members from across the United States and Canada journeyed across the Pacific Ocean to attend the meetings and move the work of NFRC forward.

A Focus on Strategic Planning
Looking to keep its future focused and on target, NFRC presented a new vision statement, mission statement, core values, and goals to the membership at its spring member meeting. They were approved by the Board of Directors after a lengthy strategic planning process. The Board also began approving more detailed objectives.

The new plan provides NFRC staff and leadership direction for the next three to five years and represents the combined effort of the NFRC Board, staff, and membership. The plan was developed using a process that encouraged review and participation by all interested parties.

“As NFRC grows in terms of both membership and products/services offered, now is the right time to establish a thoughtful forward-looking document to lead us through the organization’s next chapter. It was also important to everyone working on this plan that it be open, inclusive, and reflect different voices within the industry,” said Jim Benney, NFRC executive director.

Non-Residential Wrangling
As was expected, the non-residential program brought a wealth of open dialogue. As this program continues to take shape, NFRC welcomes your input. The conversation will continue at future task group and member meetings. Stay tuned for more developments.

But What About Doggie Doors?
In case you were wondering, the Technical Interpretations Policy Committee decided that NFRC could not rate a pet door. Question answered.

Research
The Research and Technology Committee shared that $695K has been allocated for research through 2007. Nine projects are approved and underway and two are pending approval (domed skylights and 201 calibration and comparison).

Everyone worked very hard at this year's meeting. But once the business of the organization ended, the participants enjoyed the Big Island of Hawaii. While some took helicopter tours, others hiked the volcanoes, and a group even went in search of whales. It was "whale soup" on the ocean according to the Catamaran captain, though the perfect photo seemed to elude the group.
