Codes Update

The International Energy Conservation Code (IECC) includes language requiring the use of NFRC certification and/or labeling. Understanding where NFRC is making a difference and how the organization can help new states as they adopt the language and procedures is a key objective of the Council. Each issue, Update provides a summary of changes across the country. Here's the latest:

The California Building Standards Commission voted to rescind its code recommendations from July 2003. Instead of allowing the state to pursue separate fire codes from the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), the Commission's action will allow state agencies to move forward with International Code Council-created codes, such as the IECC.

Colorado upgraded its voluntary commercial energy code to the 2003 IECC, including the code's reference to ASHRAE 90.1-2001.

In Illinois, the Capital Development Board unanimously adopted the proposed rule of the Illinois Energy Conservation Code that will establish the 2000 IECC with the 2001 supplement as mandatory requirements for all commercial buildings in the state.

Michigan's new Uniform Energy Code (which includes NFRC references) has been temporarily suspended after the Michigan Association of Home Builders filed an injunction in Ingham County Court. The status of the new rules will be determined in a trial at a later date.

Do you know the status of your state's energy code? A great source of information on this topic is the Building Codes Assistance Project.
