Chairman’s Message

Where We’re Going

Most organizational leaders shudder when they hear the words, “strategic planning.” They recoil at the thought of sitting for days in bland meeting rooms, striving to think “outside the box” amidst a sea of scribbled-on easel pads. Yet strategic planning is essential for any organization that seeks to grow and prosper. So last year, my fellow Board members and I jumped into the process with both feet.

I’m pleased to announce that while it hasn’t been easy, NFRC will soon complete a strategic planning process that will set the organization’s direction for the next five years and beyond.

At the beginning, we settled on three questions that we would attempt to answer throughout the strategic planning process. These were:

  • In what areas can we truly be effective, and what are our priorities within those areas?
  • Where do our strengths lie and where can NFRC make a difference?
  • How can we most effectively meet the needs of our various stakeholders, which include our own staff and members, the average homeowner, and everyone in between.

A New Vision, Mission, and Goals
So, how have we answered? At this point, with a new vision and mission that provide a direction for the future of NFRC. And with a set of goals based on that vision and mission and objectives to meet those goals.

NFRC’s new vision is as follows: “NFRC is the recognized global leader in delivering energy and related performance ratings and certification for fenestration products and systems.” The vision foretells where our leaders want to take NFRC. It relates to our strengths in developing energy performance ratings systems and the dream of expanding this strength beyond the borders of the United States.

As its new mission, the Board adopted: “NFRC develops and administers comparative energy and related rating programs that serve the public and satisfy the needs of its private sector partners by providing fair, accurate and credible, user-friendly information on fenestration product performance.” This mission relates the desires of the leadership to provide ratings that meet both the requirements of industry and wishes of the general public.

The Board continues to work hard on the strategic plan. This year, the Board approved the following goals:

  • Strengthen the organization’s ability to achieve its mission.
  • Continually evaluate and improve the existing NFRC programs.
  • Build new programs as needed.
  • Maintain a long-term global focus.

The specific objectives under goals 1 through 3 are now approved. As soon as we complete the objectives for Goal #4, we will post a summary on the NFRC Web site for all our members to review. We’re on track to publish the final strategic plan later this year, and there’s still time to get involved and provide input. Please provide any thoughts you have to any NFRC Board member, but act quickly. Soon we’ll have our plan in place, and we’ll be racing into the next 15 years of NFRC history.

A Big Thanks to All Involved
Before I close, let me thank everyone involved in the strategic planning process. Our LBL facilitator Randy Rollinson has done a wonderful job of keeping us focused and on track. Alecia Ward, the Board Vice Chairman, grabbed the project by the horns, assembled a cross-cutting work team, and continues to be the driving force behind its success. And we couldn’t do it without tremendous support from Jim Benney and the NFRC staff, as well as our legal counsel Scott Meza.
