Spotlight on the Midwest Energy Efficiency Alliance (MEEA)
The Midwest Energy Efficiency Alliance (MEEA) is a collaborative network advancing energy efficiency in the Midwest to support sustainable economic development and environmental preservation. MEEA works to promote energy efficiency as the fastest, cleanest, and most cost-effective way to achieve measurable and sustainable savings by bridging the gap between energy-efficiency policy and program administration. MEEA’s current policy work includes collaborated efforts to establish Energy Efficiency Portfolio Standards (EEPS) in the Midwest, as well as the promotion of commercial and residential energy efficiency building codes. Recently, MEEA worked to pass legislation in Illinois for a statewide residential building code and is currently working with other states, including Iowa, Michigan, Ohio, and Indiana, to upgrade commercial and residential building codes standards to comply with the 2009 International Energy Conservation Code (IECC) and the ASHRAE 90.1-2007 standards as set forth in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. In addition to policy advocacy, MEEA administers several successful programs and serves as a resource promoting best practices, training students and professionals, advancing emerging technologies, and facilitating utility coordination of local, state, and regional programs. One of MEEA’s flagship programs is Building Operator Certification (BOC), a professional certification program focusing on energy efficiency and preventative maintenance in schools, municipal building, and commercial space. Another key program offering is Lights for LearningTM (L4L), which educates children in kindergarten through 12th grade about the importance of energy efficiency and helps them raise money to support their schools by selling energy-efficient products at fundraisers.
