NFRC Members Meet in Arlington

CMA Program Advances; Board Takes Action on Agenda Items

National Fenestration Rating Council members gathered at the Fall Membership Meeting just outside of our nation’s Capitol in Arlington, Va. last month, where they made considerable progress on many important issues, including the Component Modeling Approach (CMA) for nonresidential fenestration products. After the CMA Technical and Ratings Committees reviewed over 100 ballot responses and comments on the draft, the Board approved numerous technical revisions to NFRC 100 and 200 to accommodate the CMA program.

“The CMA task group and committee members have been working extremely hard on advancing this program, especially in these past few months,” said Jim Benney, NFRC’s executive director. “By getting down to the details and working together, we are developing a CMA program that we can all agree on.”

The Board also approved two research projects related to the CMA program, the development of updated frame grouping rules and the development of a condensation resistance procedure for CMA.

New Initiatives Discussed
The week began with discussions and meetings on new initiatives, including how to rate and certify storm doors and windows and garage/rolling doors.  At the Storm Door and Window Task Group meeting, members discussed selecting a technical procedure for rating storm windows based on surface emissivity of the glass using NFRC 301 and 302.  Discussions are set to continue at the next membership meeting in the spring.

Board Approves Glossary Eight Years in the Making
After eight years of effort and dozens of NFRC membership meetings, the NFRC Board approved a glossary of terms related to NFRC standards and programs.  The Glossary and Terminology Task Group, led by Charlie Curcija of CARLI, Inc., resolved the ballot during the Research & Technology Committee meeting.

The Board also approved revisions to several NFRC program documents, including the Product Certification Program, the Certification Agency Program, and the Laboratory Accreditation Program.

“I am extremely pleased with the progress and accomplishments that were made in Arlington,” said Benney. “Not only do our members work especially hard at these meetings, they also dedicate a significant amount of their time outside of them as well.”
