NFRC Discusses Energy Codes and Fenestration at AIA Show

Session Takes Closer Look at Fenestration's Role in Energy-Efficient Buildings

Greenbelt, Md., May 19, 2008 – The National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC) participated in the American Institute of Architect's (AIA) 2008 National Convention and Design Exposition, May 15 to 17, in Boston. NFRC Executive Director Jim Benney delivered a presentation on energy codes and fenestration during a session on Saturday, May 17.

During the session, "Energy Codes and Fenestration," Benney discussed fenestration's role in energy efficiency and building design. More than 44 states and reference or require NFRC ratings in their energy codes.

"I'm incredibly pleased that I was able to be a part of this event," said Benney. "Architects are one of the many important stakeholders of NFRC and we value the relationship we have built with AIA."

NFRC is well known for its independent rating and labeling program for the residential sector. Its familiar energy performance labels can be found on new windows all over the country. NFRC also administers a Site-Built Program for the commercial sector, and next year, it will introduce a new Component Modeling Approach (CMA) that will produce whole product energy performance ratings for nonresidential fenestration. The ratings will be generated using an online database of glazing, framing, and spacer components. It will provide many benefits to the design community, such as showing how changes to a component can affect the energy performance of a fenestration product.

The NFRC session qualified for AIA continuing education units in the Health, Safety, and Welfare category. NFRC is a certified provider for the AIA's Continuing Education System and the Construction Specifications Institute's Construction Education Network (CEN).
