Introduction

The National Fenestration Rating Council, Incorporated ("NFRC") has developed and operates a uniform national rating system for the energy performance of fenestration products, including windows, doors, skylights, and similar products. The linchpin of the Rating System is a procedure for determining the thermal transmittance ("U-factor") of a product. The U-factor rating procedure is supplemented by procedures for rating products for solar heat gain coefficient ("solar heat gain" or "SHGC"), visible transmittance ("VT"), air leakage ("AL"), and condensation resistance ("CR"). Together, these rating procedures, as set forth in documents published by NFRC, are known as the NFRC Rating System.

The Rating System employs computer simulation and physical testing by NFRC-accredited laboratories to establish performance ratings for fenestration products and product lines. The Rating System is reinforced by two certification programs, one for residential and one for nonresidential products, under which fenestration manufacturer's/responsible parties may certify and label fenestration products to indicate those performance ratings.

The requirements for the rating, certification, and labeling program of residential products are set forth in the NFRC's Product Certification Program (NFRC 700, PCP), Link to NFRC 700.  Requirements for the rating and certification of project-specific nonresidential products are set forth in NFRC Component Modeling Approach Product Certification Program (NFRC 705, CMA-PCP), Link to NFRC 705.

To become a participant in the NFRC PCP, please contact the NFRC office at 301-589-1776 or by e-mail at pcp@nfrc.org to request an NFRC Certification Program packet.   To download the packet now, click here; please note: be sure to request an NFRC License Agreement from the NFRC directly, as this information is not included in the packet download and is required to be completed before certification authorization of any product can be obtained.
