NFRC Staff and Member Educate Las Vegas Code Officials

On June 9, NFRC member Frank Fisher, of Arcadia, Erik Makela, code consultant with Britt/Makela Group and IECC committee member, and Ray McGowan, NFRC’s senior research and technology manager, met with several code officials, code consultants, and glazing contractors to discuss NFRC ratings relating to the IECC 2006 (the commercial code required in Nevada).

NFRC responded to a request for education on the current standards required in Nevada as the local community wanted to better understand commercial fenestration energy ratings. Several presentations emphasized the requirement that commercial glazings need NFRC ratings to comply with the prescriptive code. It was explained that without the NFRC ratings, only punitive default values are allowed. Clarification was given that these default values do not meet the prescriptive code.

“This presentation to the building community in Las Vegas created an important dialogue, giving the code community essential tools to better enforce required statutes,” said McGowan. “This in turn can help the officials educate their staff so they can be familiar with the NFRC required ratings and work with local glazing contractors toward better compliance with the IECC 2006.”

If you have questions about codes, both national and local, or on enforcement, please contact Ray McGowan, NFRC’s senior research and technology manager, via e-mail.
