NFRC Manufacturer Members Invited to
Participate in R-5 Windows Program
The U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Building Technologies Program (BTP) is committed to the strategic goal of developing a net-zero-energy building and is looking for manufacturers of energy-efficient windows to participate in the process. The program is encouraging the increased production of R-5 windows (i.e., highly insulated window systems with a whole-window R-value of 5).
“The main roadblock to consumer adoption of these improved technologies has historically been the price,” said Graham Parker, a senior staff engineer working on the project through DOE’s Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. “The BTP is counting on strategic partnerships as a way to work through this challenge.”
Using an approach that includes production engineering awards and the organization of volume purchases, the BTP hopes to engage NFRC’s manufacturing members to take part in this emerging program. Future momentum is anticipated as the BTP has long-term plans including a follow-up manufacturer production engineering solicitation as well as a phase II volume purchase. “This is an opportunity for NFRC manufacturer members to be a part of an effort to change the fenestration that Americans are buying,” said NFRC Executive Director Jim Benney.
To find out how your company can participate download a fact sheet with details, deadlines, and more from the NFRC online press room. Representatives from the BTP, including Graham Parker and program partner staff from Energetics, Inc., and the Alliance to Save Energy, will present a session on the R-5 Windows and the Volume Purchase Program at the NFRC’s Summer Membership Meeting in Baltimore.
