Meet the Candidates

Four candidates are running for open seats on the NFRC Board of Directors. For this special issue of NFRC Insider, we asked the nominees three questions so that our readers can learn more about them before voting.

Fenestration Industry
There is one seat open in the Fenestration Industry (specified) category. This seat is open to a manufacturer who sells the majority of its fenestration products or systems for use in commercial construction. Sneh Kumar, TRACO, is running for this position, which has a three-year term.

Sneh Kumar

What would be your top three goals for the upcoming term as an NFRC Board member?

  •  I would continue working towards making the commercial rating program (CMA) an efficient and user-friendly certification/rating program. NFRC is going through a transition period with the advent of its commercial rating program and there's lots of work to be done before the CMA program stabilizes and matures.
  •  I would work towards making NFRC rating more meaningful by bridging the gap between ratings and actual performance. I would encourage discussion on expanding NFRC's service scope from "energy rating" to "energy & environmental rating" of the fenestration product.
  •  I would continue simplification of NFRC certification programs. It holds for both – current and CMA program. Also, I'd work to make ratings more comprehensible to consumers.

As an NFRC Board member, how would you successfully encourage the involvement of all members, especially those who are new to NFRC?

From my experience, one must have basic technical knowledge of energy performance and rating of fenestration products to successfully participate in NFRC. NFRC is a membership-driven organization. To new members, my advice would be: Don't be afraid to speak up. Also, do not wait for someone else to bring up your issues and concerns, take the lead to help yourself. A quote from Mahatma Gandhi would be appropriate to those who want to see changes at NFRC, "You must be the change you wish to see in the world."

What is your favorite NFRC memory or moment?

I cannot think of any particular as a favorite moment but I have enjoyed some heated and passionate discussions and debates on the NFRC floor.

    Laboratory
There is one seat open in the Laboratory category. Michael Thoman, Architectural Testing, Inc., is running for this seat, which is a three-year position. Mr. Thoman could not be reached before press time.

    General Interest
There are two seats open in the General Interest (unspecified) category. Each seat has a three-year term. Roland Temple, of AZS Consulting, and Kerry Haglund, of the Center for Sustainable Building Research, are running for these seats. Roland Temple could not be reached before press time.

    Kerry Haglund

What would be your top three goals for the upcoming term as an NFRC Board member?

First, I would like to see the successful launch of the CMA program. Second, I would like to evaluate the CMA process and see how it can be applied to the residential certification program – simplification. Third, I would like to increasingly promote NFRC as a leader and educator in the area of energy efficiency and building science as related to fenestration products.

As an NFRC Board member, how would you successfully encourage the involvement of all members, especially those who are new to NFRC?

The consensus process can be long and arduous, but the results benefit all in the fenestration industry. I would encourage members to get involved in task groups and committees – where all the work gets done.

What is your favorite NFRC memory or moment?

The most memorable NFRC event was when Musher DeeDee Jonrowe spoke at the membership meeting at the Alyeska Resort in Girdwood, Alaska. Her message of the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race was inspiring and her courage to continue racing and caring for her dogs while battling breast cancer was truly amazing.
