Executive Director's Message

What is Success?
By Jim Benney

At the recent membership meeting in Nashville, our Chairman, Joe Hayden, challenged the attendees to describe what they felt it means for NFRC to be “successful.” I thought I would use my space in this issue to share selected solution-oriented comments received at that meeting. But first, let me express an opinion of what NFRC success means to me.

A few caveats. First, this organization is nearly unique. Typically, an organization is either member driven or issue driven. We are a 501(c)3 organization. These are usually issue driven (e.g., the Alliance to Save Energy). But NFRC has an active and vocal membership that has been tremendously responsible for its success – especially in the development of recognized, consensus standards.

With that being said, to me success for NFRC is defined by whether or not we are accomplishing our stated mission and vision (see below). To a certain degree, we will always be striving towards our mission because we will always have more work to do (think CMA, attachments, etc.). Even on the residential side, where we have been active for the longest time, more needs to be done. This includes updating documents to reflect new technologies and procedures and always, always looking for ways to simplify our program.

Ultimately, success is related to expectations – and I have high expectations for NFRC. I would be satisfied, however, if we can be as successful in the next 15 years as we have in the past 15.

Please be sure and let this office know about your vision of success for the NFRC. E-mail your solution-oriented vision to info@nfrc.org.
