International Activities Producing Results

NFRC continues to make progress on international energy performance ratings for fenestration around the world.

Jim Benney and Bipin Shah attended the Building Envelope Energy Efficiency Technology Cooperation Conference in Beijing, April 12 and 13. NFRC was one of the hosts of the conference and Benney gave a presentation on the importance of a third-party independent certification program and discussed NFRC’s experience.

The purpose of the meeting was largely to seek the establishment of a unified rating and labeling system for building envelope components while fostering a greater understanding of the barriers that currently stand in the way of creating such a system. During the event, there were many presentations and discussions regarding the existing Chinese fenestration market.

“This is an exciting time for NFRC and its international partners,” said NFRC Executive Director Jim Benney. “We are conducting training workshops, helping set up testing facilities, and providing technical assistance for partner countries developing programs around the world.”

Shah reported on NFRC’s international activities during the 2008 Spring Membership Meeting in Nashville:

  • In India, NFRC is offering THERM and WINDOW modeling training and continues to support the development of the Centre for Environmental Planning and Technology (CEPT), which is on the short list to become the first Regional Energy Efficiency Center.
  • As the first international member of the NFRC, the Australian Greenhouse Office asked the AFRC’s representative, the Australian Window Association (AWA), to work with the Building Codes Board to assist with the APP6 project.
  • South Africa adopted NFRC technical procedures and is now a full-fledged member of the organization. This nation is also developing training for RITTAL THERM and is building a thermal chamber in accordance with NFRC requirements.
  • NFRC teamed with the China Construction Metal Structure Association to create a fenestration rating and labeling program.
