Postive Advancement and Communication Highlight the Latest with CMA

NFRC continues its efforts to educate stakeholders about the Component Modeling Approach (CMA) program as the certification and rating program for commercial fenestration moves through the development process.

During NFRC’s Spring Membership Meeting, held March 3-6, in Nashville, Tenn., Jessica Ferris, NFRC’s CMA program manager, provided an update on the program’s development. Ferris made similar presentations at two other industry events over the past few months: one for the Insulating Glass Manufacturers Alliance (IGMA) and another for the National Accreditation & Management Institute.

At the IGMA conference, she presented an overview of the CMA, and WESTLab’s Jeff Baker conducted a tutorial on FENSIZE, the precursor to the CMA Software Tool (CMAST).

“Folks are genuinely interested in the methodology and are intrigued by what the software can do,” said Ferris.

A prototype of CMAST will be ready for testing in June, with a second round of testing set to begin in the fall and a six-month pilot project scheduled in 2009. According to Ferris, the testing is designed to help NFRC learn what users think of the software and to determine how well the tool works.

CMAST will be able to maintain libraries of component data, define projects, assemble components, and calculate whole product ratings. It will offer several benefits over its predecessor. Unlike FENSIZE, CMAST will feature client-based and Web-based functionalities, be able to create IG assemblies, and have access to a database of NFRC-approved components maintained on a central server.

The software’s full release is expected in August 2009. The NFRC staff is happy to answer questions and address concerns. Please feel free to contact Jessica Ferris at jferris@nfrc.org.
