Window fenestration components
Posted: 22 Nov 2008 02:25 PM
I am trying to determine the window components used to calculate U-factor for residential windows. I am also trying to interpret the definitions of sash vs. sash frame, vs. frame.

According to the NFRC glossary, "Frame Area, Af: the projected area of frame and sash in the plane(s) parallel to the glazing surface, except for doors, which shall include the projected areas of the door jambs, header, threshold, door bottom sweep and the peripheral structural elements of the door leaf, in a plane parallel to the door core surface."

Does this mean that the frame components that make up the jambs, sill, & head of a window are not included in the Frame Area?
Would these components (window sill, etc.) be considered perpendicular to the glazing surface or parallel and how do you make that distinction?
Also, what is the fundamental difference between Projected Fenestration Product Area and Total Fenestration Product Area?
